Kahwa

SPICED GREEN TEA

Have you ever tried Kahwa? It's a heartwarming drink that comes from the beautiful valleys of Kashmir. It's basically a water-based herbal tea that's infused with saffron, cardamom, roses, and cinnamon. Trust me, it's absolutely delicious!

If you're looking for a tea that's great for early mornings or small get-togethers, you are at the right place. The best part? You can make it as fancy or as simple as you want! Add your own personal touch by using only cardamom and saffron, or throw in all the ingredients. It's totally up to you!

Serves 2

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE TEA

  • 4 almonds

  • 2 cm cinnamon stick

  • ½ tsp cardamom powder (or 3 pods) *

  • ¼ tsp dry ginger powder **

  • 1 tsp dried rose petals

  • 1 pinch saffron

  • ¼ tsp sugar

  • 2 cups water (16oz)

  • 2 tsp Himalayan green tea leaves (optional)

EXTRAS & GARNISHING

  • honey (to taste)

  • rose petals

  • more saffron

  • 4 almonds (slivered)

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a mortar, crush the almonds, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, rose, saffron, and sugar.

  2. Bring the water and the crushed mixture to a boil in a pot over heat.

  3. Turn off the heat and add in your tea leaves. Cover and let steep for 2 minutes.

  4. Separately, drop the slivered almonds into your serving cups.

  5. Strain the tea into cups and mix in honey to taste.

  6. Garnish with saffron and rose petals to your liking, and enjoy!

NOTES:

*The above measurements for cinnamon are for Ceylon cinnamon. If you use Saigon, use 1 cm.

**I'm a big fan of ginger, so I added ¼ tsp of dried ginger to this recipe. If you're not a fan, you can totally leave it out, and it will still taste great!
