Butter

I totally get it, making your own butter might seem a bit over-the-top when there are so many options at the store. But let me tell you, homemade butter is on a whole other level compared to the stuff you buy. Once you try it, you might never want to go back to the store-bought kind!

If you have a stand or hand mixer, a blender, or a food processor, making butter is easy. It only takes about 10 minutes to turn cream into solid butter.

Ingredients

  • 1 quart of good-quality heavy cream, cold

Directions

  1. Whisk the cold heavy cream in a stand mixer using a whisk attachment.

    • Whisk on medium-high until it looks like whipped cream.

    • Cover and whisk on medium-low until the butter solids and buttermilk form.

    • Whisk on low until most of the butter is on the whisk attachment.

    • Drain

  1. Place the butter in an empty bowl and pour 2 cups of ice-cold water over it. Use the back of a spatula to press the butter against the side of the bowl.

  2. Drain, discarding all liquid, and repeat this step until the water runs clear. You may have to wash it 4-6 times.

  3. When the water is finally clear, strain the butter into a colander lined with cheesecloth. Pat dry any excess water.

  4. Optionally, you can season with herbs and salt.

  5. Wrap with wax paper.

  6. Store in the fridge for up to a month. Enjoy!
